Sperm Selection for IVF: How the SPARTAN Device Works

One of the more overlooked factors in IVF success is sperm quality and specifically, how well a lab can identify the healthiest sperm out of millions in a single sample. In 2017, researchers at Stanford University and Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) unveiled a device designed to solve exactly this problem: a sperm “obstacle course” called SPARTAN (Simple Periodic Array for Trapping And isolatioN).

How the Obstacle Course Works

The device itself is small about the size of a business card and contains a network of microscopic three-dimensional posts that sperm must navigate to reach the other side. Only the fastest, most capable swimmers make it through, and these are the cells collected for use in IVF. The entire selection process takes as little as 10 to 30 minutes and, unlike traditional centrifuge-based sorting methods, doesn’t subject sperm to the mechanical stress that can damage delicate cells.

Selecting for More Than Just Speed

According to Professor Erkan Tüzel of WPI, one of the device’s co-developers, its advantage over older technologies is that it doesn’t only capture sperm with the best motility. Because sperm with structural defects such as oversized heads or bent necks tend to move less efficiently, this same filtering process naturally screens out many morphologically abnormal cells too, alongside those with better DNA integrity.

From Research Prototype to Clinical Tool

The SPARTAN technology didn’t stay in the lab for long. It was licensed by DxNow, Inc., a microfluidics company, and became the basis for the ZyMot Sperm Separation Device, marketed under ZyMot Fertility. The device received FDA clearance in 2018 and has since been adopted by fertility clinics as a gentler alternative to traditional sperm-washing techniques such as density gradient centrifugation and swim-up.

Why Sperm Selection Matters for IVF Success

Using higher-quality sperm for fertilisation can support better embryo development and, in turn, help improve IVF success rates which matters both for the emotional toll of repeated cycles and for the overall cost of treatment, since each additional cycle adds significant expense. Sperm selection technology is one piece of a much larger picture, alongside factors like egg quality, embryo grading, and uterine receptivity, but it’s an area where small technical improvements can meaningfully add up.
