Why do women choose to donate their eggs?

Using donor eggs can feel deeply personal, emotional and, at times, overwhelming. There are medical steps to understand, decisions to make, and hopes held very close to the heart. But behind every donated egg is something just as important: a real woman who has chosen, thoughtfully and willingly, to help someone else build a family.

Donors are at the heart of everything we do at Central Egg Bank. Their decisions are never casual. They are made with care, empathy, and a strong sense of purpose. To help make egg donation feel more human and less daunting, we want to share why women choose to become egg donors, in their own words.

Reason #1: It’s a personal choice

Becoming a donor is not something women decide overnight. It involves reflection, education, counselling, and open conversations with loved ones. Every donor supported by us goes through a rigorous screening and counselling process to make sure they feel informed and comfortable.

One donor explained that she chose to donate “consciously and with an open heart” after taking the time to understand what donation means – not just medically, but also emotionally. This sense of intention is something we see again and again. Donors need to be sure that this choice aligns with their values and that they are making it for the right reasons.

Reason #2: They want to help someone finally become a parent

Some donors have seen friends or family members struggle with infertility. Others simply understand that the path to parenthood is not the same for everyone.

“I know that for some people, the path to parenthood is a long and difficult one,” one donor wrote on the questionnaire as a message to the recipient. “That is why I decided to take this step, to help those who sincerely dream of becoming parents.”

For donors, egg donation offers hope to those who need it. It is a way to support someone they may never meet, but whose journey they deeply respect. Knowing that their contribution could shorten or ease that journey is often what gives donors the courage to take this step.

Reason #3: They feel grateful for the families they already have

Many donors know the love that comes with having a child, and that experience plays a big role in their choice to donate.

“I have a son, and I know what it feels like to love without limits,” shared one donor in her note written for a donor-conceived child. That love, she explained, is what inspired her to help another child be born “in love and care.”

For these donors, donation is a way of paying forward something they already hold dear. They feel grateful for the family they have and want to extend that opportunity to someone else who is still waiting.

Reason #4: They want to help bring a child into the world

When donors talk about what led them to donate, they often speak about the child and the life they hope that child will grow into.

One of our donors wrote, “Perhaps one day you will know that a part of me helped you to be born. I wanted another child to be born in love and care.” Another shared, “You came into this world thanks to the great love and power of your parents’ dreams. I am glad that I was able to play a small part in this miracle.”

All our donors believe that every child deserves to be born into a life full of love, support and kindness. Even though they aren’t the parents, donors feel proud to play a small part in the start of that child’s story.

Reason #5: They want to make a meaningful difference in someone’s life

Donors often describe egg donation as one of the most meaningful things they have ever done. It’s not about recognition or reward – it’s about impact.

“Life always finds a way, even in the most difficult circumstances,” one donor wrote. Knowing they may have helped life find that way gives donors a deep sense of fulfilment.

Many donors say that helping create a family feels like leaving something positive in the world. It is a quiet contribution, but a powerful one.

Reason #6: They want to do something good, simply because they can

Not every donor has a dramatic backstory. Some simply feel strongly about helping others when they have the ability to do so.

One donor shared that she may never meet the recipient, but wanted them to know she donated “with an open heart and with the belief that a part of me will help a new life to be born.” This simple act of giving, without expecting anything back, is what makes egg donation so special.

Reason #7: They appreciate Central Egg Bank’s ethical, child-centred approach

Donors choose to donate their eggs through Central Egg Bank because they know they’ll be treated with care and respect. Our program is built around ethical practice, clear guidance, and counselling to help donors feel at ease.

All our donors are identity-release donors, and we make sure this is carefully explained during their counselling sessions. Donors are then given the space to reflect on what it might mean in the future. For many, this openness is a positive, child-focused approach that helps build trust and connection later on.

Reason #8: They get a sense of pride and fulfilment after donating

After donation, many donors describe a sense of pride and quiet joy. Knowing they may have helped someone experience parenthood can be deeply fulfilling.

“I want you to know that you are special and your life is important,” one donor wrote in her questionnaire as a message to the child that will be born. Even after donating, many donors carry that sense of care with them.

If you are considering using donor eggs to start or grow your family, we are here to support you. You are not alone, and neither are the donors who help make these journeys possible. Contact us to learn more about how we can help you on your path to parenthood.
